Under the direction of the Manager of Custodial-Grounds, the Laborer performs general labor type functions and tasks, such as, but not limited to, routine cleaning, periodic cleaning, policing of buildings and grounds, furniture and equipment moving, set-ups, special projects, lawn cutting and trimming, shrub pruning, snow removal and all other related work in, at or around all academic, administrative, residential and auxiliary buildings and structures (university property). Performs work in the required manner, as directed.
1.Ability to perform manual tasks, including demonstrated ability to lift, handle and transport heavy furniture, equipment, materials and supplies, and, demonstrated ability to utilize and operate materials handling equipment in connection therewith.
2.Appropriate dexterity to properly use all tools and equipment as may be required to perform tasks.
3.Ability to perform work in areas or rooms where exposed to vibration and high noise levels from machinery, and to temperature extremes ranging from below zero degrees (0 F) to in excess of one hundred degrees (100 F). Must be willing and able to work in all university buildings and outdoor areas in all seasons and weather conditions.
4.Must at all times have vision and hearing sufficient to enable complete performance of any assigned work and to enable performance of such work safely as to the employee and others.
5.May be required and must be willing to accept shift assignments according to the needs of the university. May be required to perform work, as directed, at a university campus or property other than at a “home” campus. Must be available to work on an on-call basis in cases of bona fide emergency. Will be required to work overtime as the university may, from time to time, require.
6.Ability to perform manual labor, including working in standing and other positions for long durations as may be required. Ability to walk, ascend and descend stairs, etc. throughout the majority of the working day under all weather conditions.
7.Ability to properly and safely operate cleaning and landscaping tools and power equipment, such as but not limited to, scrubbing and buffing machines, ride-on tractors and mowing machinery, walk-behind mowing equipment, power trimmers, snow blowers, etc.
8.Ability and skill to properly and safely operate motor vehicles including, but not limited to, cars, trucks, vans and other like equipment not requiring specialized operator’s licenses.
9.Ability to climb ladders and work upon same up to 3 stories for bulb changing, window washing, gutter and roof cleaning, etc.
10.Ability to satisfactorily pass random drug testing.
11.Ability to work effectively in a service oriented university environment subject to frequent, changing priorities and subject to all rules, regulations, policies and procedures established from time to time by the university. Ability to maintain an acceptable attendance record and punctuality. Ability to follow through and carry out assignments and meet deadlines.
12.There is a 90 day probationary period for new hires, during which employment may be terminated without notice.
1.Sufficient physical fitness and health to perform potentially strenuous manual labor including, but not limited to, heavy lifting, handling and moving of required materials, bending, stooping, reaching, kneeling, crouching, climbing, balancing, cleaning, digging, and walking.
2.Must have a valid driver’s license.
3.Ability to satisfactorily communicate (read, write, speak and understand) in English.
4.Employment is conditional upon the satisfactory result of a post-offer of employment medical/vision/hearing examination and drug test administered by a university selected licensed medical practitioner, indicating fitness and health to perform the job.
5.High school or trade school diploma, or equivalent, preferred.
6.Previous experience in similar or related manual labor job assignments preferred.
7.Must be available for variable shifts and overtime as required.
8.Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check. Candidates for hire will be required to sign a waiver authorizing the background check and produce a Social Security Card.
