Posting Summary: Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of U.Va.'s buildings, infrastructure and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.
We have multiple opportunities for Roofers who support Facilities Management's goal of providing a consistent, cost effective and the control of safe working conditions for Facilities Management. Roofers repair all types of roof flashing or gutters at the University and install various types of roofing systems and new construction, as well as fabricates sheet metal parts with limited supervision. Roofers are required to work in outdoor conditions and from heights.
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Applicants must have a minimum of four years of work experience as a roofer, with experience installing and/or repairing commercial flat roofs, metal roofs, gutters, flashing, and slate. Working knowledge of electric hand and shop tools, as well as knowledge of fall protection systems; donning a fall protection harness, and tying-off is essential. The ability to perform strenuous manual labor is required. Demonstrated verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and interact with people of diverse backgrounds is necessary. The incumbent must have the ability to work overtime which could include nights and weekends and the ability to respond on an emergency basis as needed. Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Outlook and Word, as well as the ability to use computers and associated applications for time tracking and documentation of work is essential. Experience troubleshooting roof leaks, as well as waterproofing building exteriors is preferred. Fall Protection Competent Person training is highly preferred. Use of mobile device to take pictures and send emails, as well as a valid Driver's license, with a positive points balance is highly desired.
