The Lead Stationary Engineer is a member of the Utility Plant team, responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all utility plant equipment. The Lead Stationary Engineer stands watch in the utility plants, which includes making rounds, taking readings, and starting/stopping equipment to satisfy campus heating, cooling, and electrical requirements. The Lead Stationary Engineer monitors plant equipment and makes recommendations regarding maintenance and potential replacement needs. Additionally, the Lead Stationary Engineer is responsible for assisting the Associate Director, Utilities & Infrastructure with staff schedules, staff timekeeping submissions, chemical treatment programs, preventive maintenance programs, log entries, and supply chain.
Essential Job Functions:
Assure daily logs of all activities occurring during shifts are completed including operational changes and any equipment repairs or alterations.
Manages staff scheduling program to ensure all shifts are covered with the required staffing levels.
Monitor and lead the preventative maintenance program for all utility plant equipment.
Oversees chemical treatment programs and reports findings to Associate Director, Utilities & Infrastructure.
Assists with weekly time keeping submission for both bargaining unit (through Kronos) and non-bargaining unit staff, as required.
Submits purchase requests for supplies and services as needed to maintain equipment operations; requests are reviewed with the Associate Director, Utilities & Infrastructure.
Start, stop and operate boilers, chillers, combustion turbine/generator and related equipment consistent with a utility plant environment.
Perform routine maintenance, lubrication, and cleaning of boilers, chillers, and combustion turbine/generator and plant equipment on a regular basis.
Tests boiler and cooling water conditions and adds chemical treatment to maintain proper limits and to prevent deposits and corrosion.
Understand and become proficient in the operation and use of all plant software packages.
Make rounds and keep equipment and plant logs.
Monitor and log fuel oil and gas consumption.
Maintain and submit monthly sewer credit worksheet.
Maintain gasoline consumption and inventory master spread sheet.
Attend staff meetings, training seminars and in-service plant equipment training sessions as scheduled.
Performs assigned duties in a manner that fosters initiative, cooperation, problem solving and team building.
Makes recommendations to update or institute current or new practices or policies within the plant.
Perform other functions and duties as assigned.
Scope of Responsibility:
Knows the policies, procedures, and practices necessary to conduct normal function of a specific section, unit, or work area. Is aware of the role of the position and its potential impact on the working unit.
Reports directly to Associate Director Utilities & Infrastructure, with minimal supervision. Makes independent decisions regarding staff scheduling, minor purchase requests, and preventive maintenance programs.
Exchanges routine and non-routine information using tact and persuasion as appropriate requiring excellent oral and written communication skills. The incumbent must be computer literate and able to read and interpret plans, specifications, and technical manuals.
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Must possess State of Maryland 1st Grade Stationary Engineer’s License.
Five years of experience working in a central power plant with high pressure boilers, large centrifugal chillers and auxiliary equipment.
Basic computer skills desired.
Must be willing to work overtime.
Must be willing to work rotating shift work.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Mechanical aptitude and the ability to perform physical work in a hot environment.
Remaining stationary for extended periods of time.
Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
Communication skills using the spoken word.
Ability to see within normal parameters.
Ability to hear within normal range.
Ability to move about.
Occasionally lifting, carrying objects weighing 60 lbs. or less.
Capable of climbing ladders to access roof mounted equipment.
