Reporting to the Manager, the Physics Lab Specialist provides technical and managerial support to the Physics department's research and instructional programs, including the Teaching & Research Laboratories, Machine Shop, Poster Printer, JEOL Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Dimension 3100 Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), Class 100 Clean Room, Telescope Facility, and Server Room. This position requires a self motivated person possessing a variety of technical, and managerial skills at the professional level. The Lab Specialist is very involved in the department's mission of education and research.
Specific duties include:
Manages the daily operations and maintenance of the department Instructional Laboratories and Demonstration Facility, including training, scheduling and supervising laboratory setup personnel;
Provides IT support for departmental computers, servers and printers, including poster printer;
Arranges for additional support as required;
Provides AV support for the Physics Seminars;
Orders equipment and supplies for instructional laboratories;
Effects repairs or arranges service for equipment in the teaching and research labs as indicated;
Assists in developing experimental setups for research and instructional laboratories;
Using machining and electronics skills fabricates parts for research and instructional laboratories;
Works with the Inventory Department to maintain the department's capital and sensitive inventories;
Manages key control and distribution, and roof and room access control using the university RT system;
Submits AIM requests to Facilities as indicated and manages the Loading Dock;
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in Physics, Engineering or related technical field.
Four years experience in technical work relating to the physical sciences with electronics and machining experience, and two years experience related to IT support including Macintosh, Windows and Linux operating systems is highly desirable.
Experience with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), Telescope, Clean Room, Machine Shop, and optics is desirable.
