Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Fire Inspector NFPA 25 for the Department of Emergency Services. This position reports to the Assistant Director of the Fire Systems Bureau within Emergency Services. This position, in compliance with university and New Jersey Division of Fire Safety Standards, conducts tests in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 25 on all fire pumps, fire sprinkler systems, and fire standpipe systems throughout all university buildings and structures.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Ensures a reasonable degree of protection for life and property from fire through minimum inspection, testing, and maintenance methods for water based fire protection systems.
Performs all required tests of emergency systems; and evaluates the operational adequacy of all systems tested.
Conducts fire prevention educational programs for students, faculty and staff members.
Witness's tests of fixed suppression systems and standpipe systems.
Evaluates the performance of contract vendors in accordance with performance specifications and code requirements and all other related duties as assigned.
Conducts fire system inspections and provides enforcement capabilities on all university campuses and field stations statewide as assigned.
Prepares all required inspection reports, violation notices, complaints, reports and records in accordance with Uniform Fire Code requirements and directives of the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Associate degree in Fire Science Technology or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
A minimum of two years of experience in inspection, testing and maintenance of water based fire suppression systems.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Certifications preferred upon hire, but must be obtained within 18 months of employment are: NICET II in Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Systems, Certification from the NJ Division of Fire Safety as a Fire Sprinkler System inspector, Certification by the NJ Division of Fire Safety as a Fire Inspector. Each of these certifications are required to continue in this position. The incumbent is required to obtain each certification at his/her own expense and on his/her own time within the 18 months of employment. Failure to obtain the required certifications may result in termination.
Must have a valid New Jersey driver's license and two years safe driving experience.
Required to pass a complete background investigation by the University Police Department.
Must be able to properly interpret the New Jersey Fire Safety Statutes and Regulations and possess the skills to transmit that information to the public in both oral and written form.
Must be able to utilize computer equipment for maintaining inspection records, preparing violation notices, and for other correspondence.
Certification by the state of New Jersey as a Fire Sprinkler Contractor is required.
Certification is required to continue in this position.
Must have a minimum of NICET I prior to appointment.
A minimum of two years experience in a career or volunteer fire department. One or more years experience in municipal code enforcement, and a working knowledge of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code.
Basic computer knowledge (word/outlook/excel etc.) is preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This position requires extensive walking , climbing of stairs and ladders, traversing narrow runways and catwalks, and reaching roof areas of buildings.
Also required is the continuation of inspection task in all types of weather, investigation of fire scenes in potentially unsafe conditions and other related tasks as assigned.
This position will travel to all Rutgers properties as assigned.
