Job Summary/Basic Function: GENERALDESCRIPTION: The Building Trades Technician is an integral specialty within the Facilities Maintenance department. These technicians maintain, install, construct, repair, and modify wood, concrete and metal structural components on real-property facilities and equipment at Lamar University. Work is performed indoors and outdoors, occasionally in environments that are dusty, wet, noisy, or which may contain hazards. This position is considered as essential, and employees will be required to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to emergency situations or natural disasters. These technicians work under the direct supervision of the Building Trades Supervisor, in the Facilities Maintenance department.
DUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will have a diverse skill set, with some proficiency in the carpentry, masonry, metal fabrication and painting skill sets. More specific essential duties and responsibilities include:
1. Troubleshoots/repairs structural components, including jambs, stairwells, windows, flooring and roofing. Installs rafters, studs, sills, plates, braces, joists, floors, door assemblies, sub-floors, panels (including sheetrock, plywood, and veneers), siding, sheathing, roofing and other building materials. 2. Prepares, applies, and finishes mortar, concrete, plaster, and stucco to horizontal/vertical surfaces. 3. Welds, cuts, brazes, and/or solders ferrous and nonferrous metals using various welding processes. 4. Inspects, maintains, repairs, and installs mechanical and electrical roll-up doors, and gates. 5. Applies protective coatings such as paint, primers, stains, and sealants to real-property surfaces. 6. Troubleshoots, repairs, and installs commercially manufactured locking devices. 7. Installs forms and reinforcing material. Erects scaffolding and works from ladders and mobile platforms. 8. Operates power tools to include power saws, drills, welders, grinders and other associated tools. 9. Coordinates with contractors to explain small projects, obtain price quotations, and monitor work. 10. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: An Associate Degree or completion of a formal technical training program within the field of carpentry, welding, masonry or related field is preferred. The combination of formal education and at least 3-years of experience may be accepted in lieu of a certified degree. A valid Texas drivers license is required.

Manual/Physical: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work. Some combination of climbing and balancing, to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crawling, working at heights and working in confined spaces. May involve the lifting of moderately heavy objects, up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis. Requires a full range of physical motion to operate manual and electrically-powered tools.
Communication: Ability to listen, communicate and understand directions, information and ideas presented verbally and in writing. Develop and maintain cooperative and professional relationships with fellow employees and customers. Uses logic and reasoning to analyze, evaluate and exercise good judgment to make appropriate decisions.
Environmental: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, or toxic agents.
