The Facilities Electrician, a full-time position under the direction of the Tanglewood Facilities Manager and assisting the Lead Electrician, is responsible for the testing, maintenance, modification, overhaul, installation, upgrade, service, and repair of all types of electrical, electronic, communication, network, emergency power and other critical systems in theatrical, commercial and residential applications for the Tanglewood facility and BSO properties in the Berkshires. The position performs work in support of temporary electrical installations for function and events and provides coordination and oversight of all energy, alarm, facilities video management (VMS), access control, life safety, elevator and other building systems work performed by in-house staff and outside contractors. The position requires on duty coverage during popular artist and other special events throughout the year. The Facilities Electrician collaborates with BSO staff and outside constituencies, contractors, vendors, authorities having jurisdiction, engineers, consultants and others regarding both permanent and temporary power and communication system designs, installations, upgrades, operations, maintenance and repairs. Performs other duties as assigned.
Under the direction of the Tanglewood Facilities Manager and assisting the Facilities Lead Electrician, the Facilities Electrician
Performs routine, predictive and preventative maintenance, testing, diagnostics, upgrades and repairs on all electrical, electronic and communication, network emergency power and other critical systems (high voltage, low voltage) lighting, alarm, video, network and control wiring systems, etc. at Tanglewood and all BSO-owned properties throughout the Berkshires. Regularly inspects and evaluates electrical, electronic, alarm, communications, emergency power, alarm, life safety, video and network equipment to ensure that it operates efficiently and safely, and maintains accurate and up-to-date records on equipment status and maintenance activities.
Liaises with internal constituents, designers, directors, and inspectors on the electrical requirements of each production, function and event during the performance seasons. Applies for and obtains electrical permits as required and performs temporary electrical installations in support of functions and events throughout the year. Oversees work by production crews and contractors to ensure compliance with all applicable life safety and electrical codes.
Develops plans and cost estimates for electrical projects as requested.
Performs monthly load tests on all Tanglewood emergency power systems and maintains accurate records of code compliance for the local authority having jurisdiction.
Engages in continuing educational programs to maintain the highest standard of excellence and knowledge in the electrical field.
Communicates with the Tanglewood Facility Manager and Lead Electrician on electrical issues and performs repairs where possible, arranges for emergency repairs as necessary, and coordinates outside contractors relating to areas of responsibility. Responds to alarm calls per Tanglewood Facilities emergency call list.
Advises the Tanglewood Facility Manager and Lead Electrician of opportunities for enhanced energy efficiency and conservation. Assists in developing capital project needs and secures contractor and vendor quotes for all work to assist with the budget process on an ongoing basis.
Continues building on established business relationships with vendors and effectively negotiates competitive pricing for quality electrical materials and equipment to ensure responsible facilities stewardship and sustainable supply chain procurement.
Works collaboratively and effectively with the Tanglewood team and all internal and external constituencies. Performs other duties within and outside the electrical trade as assigned.
Strenuous physical activity is required – must be able to access all areas of the facility including climbing ladders and scaffolding, crawl spaces and entering of confined spaces, roofs and attics. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Exterior work will require working in all weather conditions. Work environment involves exposure to materials, tools and situations that requiring following important safety precautions including the use of personal protective equipment. Position may require extended hours and varying shifts during the performance seasons and often requires availability 24 hours a day/7 days a week to respond to facility emergencies. Overtime required.
High School diploma or GED with 10 years minimum experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified preferably in a performing arts venue.
Massachusetts Master or Journeyman Electrician License
Experience in telephone and data wiring required. Must be able to perform the installation, turn-up and testing of data network cabling. Fiber optic installation and testing experience and ability preferred.
Ability to safely use testing and diagnostic equipment, hand and power tools applicable to trade and to operate and use bucket truck and similar lift equipment. Ability to read blueprints and schematics and determine methods, materials and equipment to complete projects is required.
Knowledge of the installation and operation of Square D Power Monitoring Systems, Visaplex, DMP security systems, and ExacqVision software and programs is preferred.
Ability to establish, develop, and maintain working relationships with internal and external constituencies to effectively carry our responsibilities and to be a team player.
Ability to interact professionally with internal and external constituencies, including staff, donors, contractors, service providers, vendors, inspectors, and the general public, among others.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel programs is required.
