UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. The Operations group includes Project Delivery, Maintenance & Construction, Campus Utilities & Operations, Building Services, Transportation Services and Safety. Supporting these groups, as well as the separate Emergency Management team, are the Business Intelligence & Information Technology group and the Finance & Administration group. Maintenance & Construction (M&C) is responsible for general maintenance, repair and renovations of all University of Washington (UW) main campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors and grounds. Facilities Construction is the in-house provider of minor alterations, improvements and tenant renovations including architectural, electrical, and mechanical projects, cabinetry, and campus and building signage.
Maintenance & Construction has an outstanding opportunity for a Maintenance Mechanic Lead to plan, schedule and direct the work of journey and semiskilled workers in performing carpentry trade renovations and alterations of UW buildings, facilities, grounds, equipment and utilities.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Construction Program Execution
•Determine scope of work and materials needed. •Develop accurate cost estimates, material availability and cost-effective solutions for fabrication, installation and repair work. •Read plans and blueprints, inspect projects to ensure compliance with local codes, obtain electrical permits and maintain records of work performed. •Construct projects and modifications from drawings or sketches as written. •Work with project managers to discuss any proposed project changes before construction. •Act as a project lead for assigned work orders of a complex nature. •Order materials to accomplish the work. •Perform journey-level trades’ work as necessary to meet production demands and assure proper service to campus clients. •Use computer programs to accomplish tasks, including the work management and project scheduling systems, e-mail, calendars and spreadsheets; maintain work records and write reports as needed. •Operate machinery such as forklifts, scissor-lifts, and high rangers. •Load and unload materials and supplies. •Operate vehicles such as UW vans and trucks to transport tools, equipment and personnel to various job sites.
Organizational Leadership and Engagement
•Positively support all management directives and actively promote the purpose and foundational values of M&C. •Provide information for employee performance reviews to supervisor. •Participate in the recruitment process. •Communicate and collaborate with other UW Facilities shops and other business partners such as Design Services, Capital Planning & Development and UW Information Technology to facilitate work. •Comply with all UW and UW Facilities policies and procedures, M&C protocols, i.e., Individual Accountability Protocols (IAP). •Support all management directives and the vision and values of M&C. •Participate in and follow through with M&C process improvement initiatives, including Balanced Scorecard (BSC), incorporating metrics and Lean principles into internal work processes, and promoting employee engagement in continuous improvements and innovation. •Continuously promote a safe work environment.
•Keep supervisors informed of project status, work progress, required project materials and equipment. •Team with project managers to develop project estimates. •Participate in project meetings when scheduled. •With shop supervisor, develop weekly work schedules and priority projects. •Be attentive to the success of all projects, both “Shop Direct” (“Assigned”) and “Project Managed” jobs. •Be mindful of the entirety of each project. •Resolve problems; alert shop supervisor of problems that require client contact. •Provide input to shop supervisor regarding timecard accuracy. •Actively participate in meetings and trainings as scheduled.
•Know and ensure that assigned personnel comply with occupational health and safety regulations specific to performance of the work. •This will include Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) instructions, Hazard Review Checklists (HRCs) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required. •Report all safety issues to the shop supervisor. •Maintain professional knowledge of industry standards to ensure the best products at the best prices. •Other duties as required.

•One year of full-time experience as a Maintenance Mechanic 2, journey-level trades worker, or equivalent.
•Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license required.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
•Demonstrated successful experience as a lead or supervisor. •Demonstrated successful experience working with computerized maintenance management systems. •Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products.

.Regular and predictable attendance is required. •May be required to accept variable work shift. •Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using appropriate safety precautions. •Must be able to work in a smoke-free environment. •Ability to lift and move heavy materials is required. •Must be able to work outside under all weather conditions. •Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job. •Must participate in medical screening/monitoring (such as TB screening and proof of measles inoculation) required for work assignments in locations, including but not limited to, nonhuman primate areas, the Animal Research and Care Facility, and the University of Washington Medical Center. •Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job. •For these specific trades: Mason/Plasterer, Glazier, Roofer, qualification in the operation of an aerial platform lift and certification as an aerial bucket truck operator or obtaining certification within 90days of employment may be required for select positions. •This specific essential requirement will be stipulated on the requisition in UWHIRES and in the job posting when it is essential to the position.
Carpentry •Demonstrated success in concrete formwork, such as footings, foundations, walls, slabs, retaining structures and stairs. •Demonstrated success working with all types of door hardware, such as electrical, pneumatic and manual, locks, strikes, closers, operators, coordinators, exit devices and panic hardware. •Demonstrated success in fabrication and installation of casework, furniture and other fixtures. •Demonstrated success in finish carpentry, such as casework installations, milling and installations of all types of trim and shelving. •Demonstrated success in metal framing, such as walls, ceilings and soffits, including openings with hollow metal frames. •Demonstrated success with stationary power tools, such as panel and table saws, jointers, sanders, planers, shapers, edge banders, boring and mortising machines. •Demonstrated success in wood framing, such as walls, floors, ceilings, stairs and roofs. •Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a carpenter; OR full journey status as a carpenter; OR four years of applicable work experience.
