UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. The Operations group includes Project Delivery, Maintenance & Construction, Campus Utilities & Operations, Building Services, Transportation Services and Safety. Supporting these groups, as well as the separate Emergency Management team, are the Business Intelligence & Information Technology group and the Finance & Administration group.
Maintenance & Construction has an outstanding opportunity for a Sheet Metal Mechanic .
Under the direction of the supervisor and lead, provide skilled labor in the construction, maintenance, and repair of campus buildings and grounds metallic subsystems. Work with metallic flat stock, formed and/or extruded components to maintain or enhance the functionality of the campus buildings and grounds.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
•Design, fabricate and install diverse components and systems fabricated from metal.
•Construct sinks, counters, trays, and pans from diverse materials, including, but not limited to, stainless steel, galvanized mild steel, aluminum, copper, brass and other materials.
•Construct and install shelving, casework, and metal architectural components such as decking and roofing.
•Layout and install HVAC components, fixtures, and fittings.
•Construct and install metal buildings and architectural building components.
•Work from blueprints, drawings or verbal instructions.
•Design and fabricate complex metal structures, including stairs, railings, ramps, tools and components; ensure compliance with building, structural, welding, safety, and ADA codes and redesign as necessary.
•Work with leads to discuss any proposed project changes before construction.
•Interpret mechanical systems operations and technical specification manuals.
•Weld common sheet metal materials using Shield Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), soldering, brazing, plasma arc cutting and oxyacetylene cutting.
•Keep leads and supervisors informed of project status/work progress, needed materials and equipment.
•Operate all shop equipment, including shears, breaks, drill presses, grinders, punches, hydraulic presses, and all other sheet metal equipment to fabricate fittings and casework.
•Operate machinery such as forklifts, scissor-lifts, and high rangers.
•Load and unload materials and supplies.
•Operate vehicles such as UW vans and trucks to transport tools, equipment and personnel to various job sites.
•May instruct semiskilled workers.
•Communicate and coordinate with other Facilities Services shops and other business partners such as EH&S, Engineering Services, Design Services, Capital Planning & Development and UW Information Technology to facilitate work.
•Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations specific to the work and conduct on the job, including Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) instructions, Hazard Review Checklists (HRCs) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
•Comply with all UW and Facilities Services policies and procedures, FMC protocols, i.e., Individual Accountability Protocols (IAP).
•Support all management directives and the vision and values of FMC.
•Participate in and follow through with FMC process improvement initiatives, including Balanced Scorecard (BSC), incorporating metrics and Lean principles into internal work processes, and promoting employee engagement in continuous improvements and innovation.
•Actively participate in meetings and training as scheduled.
•Provide excellent customer service through effective, courteous and professional interactions with clients, colleagues and the campus community.
•Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements include:
•Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a sheet metal mechanic,
or full journey status as a sheet metal mechanic in a union,
or four years’ applicable work experience.
Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
•Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.
Additional Requirements include:
•Demonstrated successful ability in taking direction, working well with others and as a member of a team.
•Demonstrated excellent effective verbal and written communication skills.
•Possession of a valid Washington State Driver’s License or a license recognized as valid by the State of Washington.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired:
•Weld and cut all types of metals including heavy plate and structural steel.
•Sheet Metal Welding Certification by Washington Association of Building Officials
•Structural Welding Certification by the Washington Association of Building Officials
•Familiarity with a wide-variety of architectural envelope work.
•Familiarity with SMACNA (Sheet Metal and Air conditioning contractors’ National Association) construction standards and design guide.
•Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Act) regulations.
•Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products.
Conditions of Employment:
•Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety precautions.
•Ability to lift and move heavy material may be required.
•Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job.
•Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job.
•Must participate in medical screening/monitoring (such as TB screening and proof of measles inoculation) required for work assignments in locations, including but not limited to, nonhuman primate areas, the Animal Research and Care Facility, and the University of Washington Medical Center.
•Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
•May be required to accept variable work shift.
•Must be able to work in a smoke-free environment.
•Regular and predictable attendance is required.
