**The position is located in Palomar/North County San Diego, CA**
The position is full-time, benefited, and located at Palomar Observatory. This position works under the supervision of the Grounds and Mechanics group supervisor. Working independently to perform grounds and building maintenance at Caltech's Palomar Observatory located in San Diego, CA, you will work both alone or with other members of the observatory staff at times. Duties include, but are not limited to, weed/brush abatement, tree trimming, mowing, fence repair, snow/ice abatement, building repair/maintenance, painting, woodworking, and general water systems/plumbing repair. As needed, the position will assist with industrial water and septic systems repair. The role will perform and document grounds and building preventive maintenance tasks. The individual in this role will inspect and monitor the status of observatory grounds and buildings with respect to seasonal changes and advise any corrective actions needed to management. Preferred additional qualifications include backhoe loader operations experience, heavy crane operations experience, and/or heavy rigging experience.
Grounds maintenance including blowing, weed/brush control, mowing, tree trimming, fencing, snow/ice abatement, and other grounds maintenance tasks. 40%
Building maintenance including wall/door/roof repair, painting, woodworking, water systems, and plumbing repair, and other building maintenance tasks. 25%
Interface with vendors and contractors to assure timely and safe completion of all grounds and building tasks. 10%
Schedule, perform, and document grounds and buildings preventive maintenance tasks. 10%
Assist with water and septic infrastructure inspection and repair. 5%
Participate in the long-term strategic planning of observatory grounds and building maintenance. 5%
Other duties include assisting with telescope and dome maintenance tasks as needed (2%); assist with mirror cleaning and coating as needed (2%); and other duties as assigned (1%) 5%
High school diploma or GED
Must have 3 or more years of grounds and facility/building maintenance experience
Must be able to safely use basic tools, grounds tools, power tools, and chain saws
Must have a valid California driver's license and maintain it throughout employment
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. of facility maintenance equipment, tools, and supplies
Must be able to work outside in inclement weather, in confined and/or elevated spaces, at an elevation of 6000'
Previous experience with heavy machinery such as backhoe loaders preferred
Previous experience with heavy crane operations and/or heavy load rigging preferred
Previous experience with industrial water and septic systems preferred
